The Society of St. Vincent de Paul
St. Martin of Tours Conference – Parish Partner
Inspired by Gospel values, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is an international organization of
men and women joined together in spiritual growth, dedicated to offering person-to-person service to
those who are in need, living on the margins, or experiencing homelessness. SVdP was founded in Paris,
in the year 1833. For almost 200 years, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been actively serving the
most vulnerable communities throughout the United States and beyond.
In 2019, a small group of parishioners from St. Martins of Tours in Martinsville, Indiana began our local
conference of SVdP. Since then, we have been blessed to be supported by our parishioners, members of
the community and various grants to be able to now provide tens of thousands of dollars of yearly
support to neighbors in need in Morgan County, Indiana.
We meet twice per month to pray, review our activities and determine ways we can be better stewards
of the moneys entrusted to us. Our major activities include:
• Responding to calls to our helpline. While some calls are just inquiries about services available in our community, most involve follow up visits either in-person or by phone to determine what the neighbors in need are dealing with. Our assistance is limited by our funds, but the number of calls and dollars provided continue to increase. Examples of assistance include rent, beds, utilities, vouchers for furniture from Habitat Restore, car repairs, clothing for kids, etc.
• Shopping for food pantries for food and toiletries including Churches in Mission, Red Barn and Wellspring either ongoing or for special needs. We receive many of our referrals from these organizations and work closely with their clients.
• Targeted denture subsidies for the clients of the free dental clinic for residents of Wellspring.
• Since January, 2023, our St. Vincent de Paul Society conference members and volunteer St. Martin of Tours parishioners have provided sack lunches for our neighbors in need who visit the food pantry at Red Barn. On the first and third Tuesdays each month, after the morning mass, 30 sandwiches are prepared at St. Martin’s Ed Center and delivered to Red Barn. Chris Urbanowski is the contact person.
Parish volunteers are welcomed for all of our activities and we welcome those who may feel called
to become members of SVdP. Donations are gratefully accepted and we appreciate the parish
allowing us to be included in the second collection on the fifth Sundays of the year.
